The Homeless at Home

The lives in need of change and support aren't always far from home; in this case, we found them right on the back porch.

It didn't take long after moving to South Carolina for the epidemic of stray animals to make clear its severity. Underneath the outbuildings on our property, a feline family of two adults and a couple of kittens had taken shelter. Over months of wandering and regular sightings, it seems all have moved on to greener pastures (or with all this rain, perhaps dryer ones) - all, that is, but one.

What do you do when the opportunity to make good on your word presents itself? How do you respond to the chance to put your beliefs to the test?

Clearly, with this little guy/gal now left to fend for themselves, the pressure to act weighed a little more insistently on our hearts.

A New Beginning

At Anthony's insistence, the slow but purposeful journey to earning a stray's trust began again with our little friend. The grainy rustle of kibble as it jumps into a bowl has become the daily morning soundtrack for this scrawny tabby cat. The current plan is to continue to provide enough food to provide some nutrition to the cat, while we establish a protective relationship in an effort to eventually bring the cat to a clinic for medical care. At that point we will be able to evaluate the best long-term options for the kitty.
